Re: Cheap but reliable snubbie recommendations
Is there any difference between the S&W Lady Smith 642 Airweight and the regular 642 airweight, besides the name Lady Smith wording?

Have your G/F try several out to find the right fit for her.
Maybe a Ruger SP101. Definitely a bit more $, but built like a tank and nicely concealable.

Take her to a range that rents guns, let her shoot a bunch, find out what she likes. She might surprise you.

+1 for taking her to the range. also another option is looking for a good used 642, LS, or 442. i've carried a 642 for many years now. imo, i think it also would be wise to have her take some kind of concealed carry, basic handguns classes, sometimes it's not as simple as dropping it in her purse.

Don't rule out Rossi. They are made by Taurus now and are usually a bit cheaper. Not sure about the warranty though.
I got my Taurus 85 for $150 about a year ago. It is an early 90's model without the stupid lock. I just put CT grips on it.Adams County Sport Handgunners Association - President

Re: Cheap but reliable snubbie recommendations
I'm another one who would go with an auto over the revolver.
Look at the Kahr CW9 in the $350 price range.
Slimmer, lighter, less recoil, faster reloads and a more powerful round than the average .38 spl.
9mm ammo is $20 per 100 and .38 Spl is $30 per 100 at Wally World.

Re: Cheap but reliable snubbie recommendations
I can't think anything else other then taurus to fit your bill.
I carry Taurus Model 651, and was cheap, reliable, accurate, and easy to CCW.
And being chambered for .357mag, my choice on defence ammo is near limitless between 38special to 357mag.
Being stainless, and chambered for 357mag, when used with 38sp, thing is near recoilless!
