My understanding from the UGO secret fortnightly meetings, is that using a Dremel to etch some characters on the outside of the gun is permitted (as long as you include the secret Masonic emblems and such); what's frowned on, with good reason, is the Dremel FCG Polishing Job, the Dremel Muzzle Crown, and of course the Dremel Serial Number Removal Job.

I don't know of anyone who's ever said "my gun doesn't work now because I got my city name crooked."

Nah Bill Crawford dicked it all up last year sometime. Under Title 4, subsection 441234, page 3, revision 20183 ( Known as the Crawford act) Dremel NFA engraving, is now deemed "an unscrupulous damage to the coolness of the firearm and no longer permitted within the membership of the UGO. Any member engaging in such activity will be forced to watch "An Inconvenient Troof " while having Huffpost updates simul-streaming on their devices."

I've got my appointment to get my PLR-16 engraved, any reason not to go ahead and get a shotgun engraved at the same time? I plan to make it into a SBS at some point in the future.

It's not uncommon for ATF to respond that the proposed markings don't satisfy the regulations, if you shorten your name or abbreviate the town and city in a way they don't approve of. It's always easier to do the engraving once the proposed markings have been approved on a stamped Form, it's problematic to alter markings once they're engraved.
