    Default Firearms at NJ campgrounds

    I appologize if I'm in the wrong forum. I have a LTCF in Pennsylvania. I have a trailer that i own, but rent the land at a campground in NJ. Is it legal to keep a loaded firearm in my trailer in Nj. I am a full time PA resident. The campground rules never adddress firearms. Thanks in advance.

    For the love of John Moses Browning!

    DO NOT bring a gun loaded or not, into the PRNJ unless you want to spend 5-10 in Rahway.

    The campground rules are the least of your worries. And yes, you are in the wrong forum. As NJ laws would apply, you should be in the NJ Firearms Owners Association Forum. But there isn't one.

    You need to see what the NJ laws are on the subject.

    The campground doesn't mention firearms because it doesn't need to - *ALL* firearms are illegal in NJ unless meeting a *very* narrow set of exemptions. Until you know *EXACTLY* what those exemptions are - and even then, really - do NOT take anything that even *looks* like a weapon into NJ.

    P.S. - Prepare to receive pretty much the same information from every other response.

    IANAL

    That's because the mere mention of firearms in NJ is a class 1 misdemeanor unless it's done at a gun store or a firing range.

    Maybe, likely not.

    http://law.onecle.com/new-jersey/2c-...tice/39-6.html

    N.J.S.2C:39-6

    e. Nothing in subsections b., c. and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 shall be construed to prevent a person keeping or carrying about his place of business, residence, premises or other land owned or possessed by him, any firearm, or from carrying the same, in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section, from any place of purchase to his residence or place of business, between his dwelling and his place of business, between one place of business or residence and another when moving, or between his dwelling or place of business and place where such firearms are repaired, for the purpose of repair. For the purposes of this section, a place of business shall be deemed to be a fixed location.

    f. Nothing in subsections b., c. and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 shall be construed to prevent:

    (1) A member of any rifle or pistol club organized in accordance with the rules prescribed by the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice, in going to or from a place of target practice, carrying such firearms as are necessary for said target practice, provided that the club has filed a copy of its charter with the superintendent and annually submits a list of its members to the superintendent and provided further that the firearms are carried in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section;

    (2) A person carrying a firearm or knife in the woods or fields or upon the waters of this State for the purpose of hunting, target practice or fishing, provided that the firearm or knife is legal and appropriate for hunting or fishing purposes in this State and he has in his possession a valid hunting license, or, with respect to fresh water fishing, a valid fishing license;

    (3) A person transporting any firearm or knife while traveling:

    (a) Directly to or from any place for the purpose of hunting or fishing, provided the person has in his possession a valid hunting or fishing license; or

    (b) Directly to or from any target range, or other authorized place for the purpose of practice, match, target, trap or skeet shooting exhibitions, provided in all cases that during the course of the travel all firearms are carried in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section and the person has complied with all the provisions and requirements of Title 23 of the Revised Statutes and any amendments thereto and all rules and regulations promulgated thereunder; or
    I intentionally did not quote the entire section, or even the entire relevant section because I don't want to confuse the issue. We are assuming you don't have NJ FID which pertains mostly to long guns.

    1. The first question is whether your trailer and campground count as "residence, premises or other land owned or possessed by him." This is a question I cannot answer. I can tell you this - I have been told repeatedly that a hotel does NOT count, nor would staying with a relative. I don't know if there is any truth in it, but supposedly a lease or a tax bill would be the minimum to make the determination but I am not sure if that is true of even if that is enough. One or more of these terms are defined in other chapters, but not this chapter.

    "Campground" suggests to me temporary vacation lodging, similar to a hotel, and I think the answer is probably "NO."

    I could be completely wrong, but that seems to be where the answer lies.

    If you had an NJ FID it would probably be legal to have a long gun there.

    2. Don't bring hollowpoints. Separate issue not worth exploring.

    3. How would you get the gun there and back home? The law does not provided for transporting firearms between residences or properties owned. I would guess you need to go from your home in PA to a range, get evidence you were at the range like a receipt, go to the residence in NJ. Reverse on the way back home to PA.

    I am not a lawyer and I don't have all the answers. I think I brought up where the answers lie, and I think the answer is likely No.

    Think after lurking here almost a year you would know the answer to both.

    Worth repeating
