Re: Bringing guns into NJ as a non resident
Even if you live in NJ (which I did for 30 plus years) and have a FID card there's only two exemptions that I know of that are fairly clear:
-To and from the range (directly)
-To and from home to business IF YOU OWN THAT BUSINESS!
Everything must be locked, separated and stored properly. No stops, no deviations, etc.
The easiest way to understand NJ gun laws is this:
Guns are illegal in NJ with a few exceptions that must be followed to the "T". But yes, what the post in RED above says "don't even think about it"."I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery." Thomas Jefferson

Re: Bringing guns into NJ as a non resident
One time when I got back home from the PRNJ, I realized I had left my 9mm with a clip full of HSTs in the console. I was immediately consumed by a feeling of impending doom even though I was sitting there safe in my driveway. I had gotten home from work in a rush and forgot to bring it in the house with me before I left.
How much would that have sucked if I got pulled over?
That will NEVER EVER happen again!!!!

FID (or rather, more accurately, FPID) lets you transport long arms without the "exempted locations" requirement.
As far as transportation without FPID (or in the case of pistols, a carry permit), nothing needs to be locked, though I believe they need to be in a sealed container. There are technically reasonable deviations allowed, though no one knows what is acceptable, so pretty much every assumes no deviations.

Quoted for Emphasis. I would expect a hefty jail time, regardless of whether they are locked up or not. See: Shaneen Allen. I wouldn't be caught DEAD OR ALIVE anywhere NEAR the New York, Maryland or New Jersey Border. They can all piss up a catheter.

Re: Bringing guns into NJ as a non resident
No, you cannot bring any firearm to his house, not even a BB gun.
With an NJ FID you could mostly drive around NJ with an unloaded (NJ Compliant) rifle or shotgun. Then you could bring a long gun to his house, but you would need an FFL to sell. Don't even think about a handgun.
Without an NJ FID, you can bring a rifle or a handgun directly to and from the range in NJ. Or a business you own or a property you own under certain circumstances. Since that is not your question I do not wish to confuse that part of the issue. It's to and from the range. Not his house to pick him up on the way to the range, not a hotel next to the range, to and from the range. You can meet him at the range, shoot the firearm, and sell it to him. An FFL is required so the range must be willing to perform a transfer.
Do not bring any hollowpoints to NJ. Even without a gun, you can go to jail. They are legal under certain circumstances, similar to a handgun, but I am not going to explain it since it sounds like you have no reason to become confused about it. If it comes up ask.
