slide cuts in a carry gun
Slide cuts look hella cool.
They lighten the gun.
any adverse reasons for doing this to a CC piece ?

Re: slide cuts in a carry gun
Two issues.
1. It impacts the inertial dynamics of the handgun (slide velocity vs. recoil spring vs. recoil impulse) so you have to be careful choosing an appropriate recoil spring weight.
2. Make sure the edges are chamfered so you don't get cut manipulating the weapon.
I'd recommend against.

Something like this?

I dunno... hmm... a lighter slide would create increased felt recoil and perhaps put additional wear on parts.Μολὼν λάβε

Re: slide cuts in a carry gun
I was thinking just a coffin cut on the top of the slide right behind the front sight. The metal is thin there so it would lighten it sooooo much, but it would look hella-cool.

Re: slide cuts in a carry gun
Quite the contrary. Less reciprocating mass makes the slide highly tuneable through spring rates and returns to battery a lot smoother. The gun is no longer yanked around by the heavy inertia of the slide. The Glock 34/35 and Beretta 92, use this idea quite well.
Among others:

The flattest shooters have heavy stationary parts with lightened reciprocating parts.
The best way to lighten a 1911 without actually making holes is to tri-top the slide.

Before THE CHURCH OF BROWNING comes storming in, I am talking about an XD.
Not that I see anything wrong with improving on any design, or mating a design better to a specific job, but that is a discussion for another thread.

Re: slide cuts in a carry gun
no one can say for sure if it'll cause the metal to weaken enough to cause a problem. I would guess that the only real issue would be that you could exacerbate an existing flaw/defect in the metal in that area and cause the slide to crack. On most autoloaders, the front of the slide (just under where the barrel exits) is a part that smacks hard against the compressed spring & frame under recoil. With the area you want to cut, this would put the stress of recoil on the sides of slide right under under the cut.
I'd probably reserve the slide cut for a range gun just to be safe. That being said, you're probably okay either way.

Re: slide cuts in a carry gun
It's been done....on one of Rob Leatham's guns.
Canyon creek has also been doing it.
