Is this normal /acceptable wear for a handgun ( pics )
I have recently been having some malfunctions when shooting my M&P shield which is concerning because it's my carry piece. I shoot the gun frequently so i thought that a more detailed cleaning might be needed to prevent any malfuntions
I was cleaning the gun and no matter how much effort i put into cleaning there is always a large amount of carbon and residue on any cloth or patches that i use .
but i was wondering is it normal to have these significant burn/powder marks on the rails ? I have 1000 + rounds through the gun so i expect some wear but i was wondering if this is acceptable .

What kind of grease or oil do you use? It could be that.

From the pics, it's hard to tell if the rails are actually worn down, or if the finish is just worn off. If you shoot the gun alot, you're going to have some wear. Keep the rails greased & shoot it.

Those aren't burn / powder marks. Its wear from the slide rubbing on the rails. Did you run it dry?
Doesn't look excessive for 1000 rounds and I don't notice any galling. But, from now on, every time you clean it put a dab of grease (not oil) on every light spot.
You will be fine.

I put Wilson Combat Grease in the SLIDE rails. When you do that, the slide feels like it is moving on ball bearings when you rack it and fire it.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary. You mention you keep getting carbon trails. If you want to totally eliminate that, get you a squirt bottle and some mineral spirits and saturate the thing, then agitate with a stiff paint brush. "Gun Scrub' or brake clean the residue and you'll be clean as a whistle. Warm soapy bath will also work if you got a compressor to blow it dry (I just washed one of my G41's in a warm bath).
Pay attention to cleaning the extractor area. If it isn't functioning properly, it can cause you to have failures. If you use dirty ammo, they can gum up fairly quickly.BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

That looks like normal wear. Nice to see on a carry gun, it shows you practice with it. What are the nature of the malfunctions? I would be more worried about that than cosmetic issues.
