Re: The best modern 7.62X51 battle rifle.
I have been doing research on the Sig Sauer 716 and it looks like a very high quality piece. It's a toss up between their 5.56 piston 516 and the 7.62 piston 716 for me. I've reloaded 5.56 for 30 years and have everything I need and would have to gather up components to reload 7.62 but then I'd have a more effective rifle with a more effective cartridge.

Re: The best modern 7.62X51 battle rifle.
I am going to a dual use carbine class this week taught by Jack from KAC. I am bringing my SR25 ECC.
The SR25, SCAR, and HK have both seen wide deployment.
I don't have the SCAR as I prefer the other 2.
A FAL is on my list of wants.

Re: The best modern 7.62X51 battle rifle.
If money were no object...I'd get a full "prototype" M110 deployment kit that shows up on Gunbroker from time to time for like $23,500 (with the suppressor and optics).
But since money is an object...I'm saving up for a KAC SR25 (hopefully this year) to convert into a M110 deployment kit over a couple years.
To me, the SCAR is nothing special. But neither is the AR15-platform. Although I'm far more familiar with the AR15-platform, so I'm sticking with what I know.
Got my SBR Colt M4 LE6920 that is a good Mk18 Mod0 clone right now, and will expanding it into a SOPMOD Block I kit with a 14.5" M4A1 upper using the SOPMOD-correct TA01NSN ACOG, and eventually a 16" RECCE and 18" Mk12 Mod1 upper.
And I got my Colt MT6700, which is just a TA31RCO-A4CP from becoming a M16A4 clone.
So I'm looking for another LE6920 to turn into a dedicated M4A1 clone, a HK MR556A1 to turn into a M27 IAR clone and a KAC SR25 to turn into a M110 clone.
I know...USMC weapons and I'm a Navy vet. But remember - the Marines are the Navy's infantry!

Re: The best modern 7.62X51 battle rifle.
I would go for a SCAR-H, hands down. However, since they will never come down to a reasonable price (I would never pay more than $1400 for one) I would probably chose a Springfield M1A with an 18 inch barrel, I see them dip into the $1300 range and eventually it will happen, when I have the money to make the purchase. Right now the only 7.62 NATO rifle I own is the Zastava M77, which I am converting back to military spec. You can't beat it for $530.
Another compelling option is the PTR-91, a quality, American made, clone of the HK G3. $800-$900 gets you a wonderful rifle that is ready for optics and takes magazines costing less than $10. The DSA FAL's are few hundred dollars more than the PTR but very nice too, the Voyager series of rifles goes for $975 on Atlantic Firearms but has no rail.
I am hoping the AR-10 market continues to develop, I would love to own a high quality example that doesn't break the bank.Sanity, yours if you can keep it.....

Re: The best modern 7.62X51 battle rifle.
I'm piecing together an AR10 now. Im using an Aero M5 receiver set for my build. I'd love a Scar, but I cant drop all that money at once. I'd rather spend less and piece together an AR exactly the way I want it. It should be finished by the summer time.
