Sight option for AR
I have a flat top AR with a red dot.
I know I should have some sort of iron sights, but the only ones I am familiar with are Magpul and they seem extremely expensive for a backup.
What other option are there for back up sights?

Re: Sight option for AR
Are you looking at the Magpul MBUS or MBUS Pro? The Pros are pretty expensive, but the regular polymer MBUS are reasonable.

Re: Sight option for AR
Honestly the MBus Pros are a great value IMO. I have 2 sets of them, on two different rifles. They have a very small footprint and are well made. You might spend 2/3 more on Knights Arm sights, which are the next best comparable option, again, IMO. You can find them for $130 shipped for a set.
If you really don't see the point in spending that much, or will seldom use them, then the polymers are less expensive and a viable option.neckbeard extrordinaire

Re: Sight option for AR
I opted for the Magpul MBUS PRO. I found a reputable dealer and got them for $120 shipped. These are fantastic, all steel, flip up sights.
MaTech also makes a nice REAR sight, however, it is only adjustable for 200+ yards.
Daniel Defense, Troy, and Diamondhead all make their version of steel/aluminum flip ups and all will work.
STAY AWAY from ANYTHING on eBay. They are ALL knockoffs. I knew this, still bought a set of Troy knockoffs, and they sucked. Sucked a lot. Like, a lot a lot.
Diamondhead makes a polymer version of their sights but have heard it's no better than standard Magpul MBUS and are double the price.I'm only here for the wood c-rings.

What Magpul BUIS are you looking at? The PRO's are a little pricy the regular models are middle of the road for what is out there. There are some cheaper ones but I would only trust them for a range rfile. There are many more expensive models out there.
PSA has a set of flip up irons out. $80 for a pair.

Re: Sight option for AR
I priced the regular Magpuls at my local shop, the Pro series are way out of my budget. Sounds like the regular ones may be the right choice, I just have to shop for a better price.
My AR is an entry level Colt. Flat top and a round hand guard with rails.

Re: Sight option for AR
Also what is the purpose of this rifle? Range Plinker? Home Defense?
What was the price at your local shop? Many businesses, not just firearms businesses make the biggest margins on accessories rather than the primary product.
Look online for better prices and since you need a pair, buy them that way they are almost always a better deal when purchased as a pair. You could also ask the shop to price match since you got the rifle there.
I can't think of anything I would personally trust that is cheaper than the standard Magpul BUIS.
Just out of curiosity what red dot do you have?Last edited by QuackXP; February 10th, 2015 at 05:04 PM.

Check the price on Brownells. The MBUS PRO's are a leap, skip, hop and a jump in quality from the plastic MBUS back ups IMO. I really like them and wish they had hit the market before I bought my Troy back ups. Having been to a two day carbine class where I was told to turn off my red dot and switch to irons, you learn why you want decent back up sights made of metal.
