Which one advice needed
For a combination of range and self defense.
I have decided on the Ruger lcr model 5401 or S & W 442.
Both will be in 38 caliber.
Any advice on which one to choose?
Thank's

The LCR is polymer grip frame with an aluminum frame. The 442 is aluminum frame. I personally do not like polymer nor aluminum pistols. I'd personally go with a stainless J-frame if you want light weight and power.
If I HAD to choose a lightweight 38, it'd be a Smith J-frame with the scandium frame and stainless cylinder, model M&P340. The scandium will hold up better, and you can shoot 38's out of it for a long time.

The other S&Ws are good options over the LCR. However, go with the 442 out of the two you asked opinions on. Much more durable and better looking to boot. If you want the option to fire single action as well as double, then the Models 38, 49 or 649 are in order. Try to find an older model without the lock.

Re: Which one advice needed
Personally, I'd go with the 442 given the OP's choice. For a combination of light weight, durability, smooth trigger, and snubby I'd actually opt for a lightly used S&W Model 37. No +Ps with the Scandium frame, but still well built.

Re: Which one advice needed
If I had to choose one of the 2 listed it would be the 442 its a well built little revolver and easily concealed but like all little things that go boom it's quite uncomfortable too shoot after a hand full of rounds, and the LCR ain't much better if at all. You want a revolver for double duty then I would look into one of the other more shootable options mentioned strictly for lightweight deep concealment the 442.
