Re: Carrying Double Action Revolver Cocked?
If you intend to carry your Ruger as a SD gun, here's what I would recommend - get involved with gun games. I am not one of those that feels that games are training vehicles, but they do teach you a lot about the weapon you carry and its manual of arms. I'd say try IDPA - it will acclimate you to drawing from a holster with concealment. It will teach you about shooting double action, on the move, behind cover at multiple targets and reloading - all "on the clock".
It IS a game and not a substitute for real training, but it is far ahead of just strapping that wheelgun on and feel that you are fully prepared to carry and, God forbid, use it, after standing in a port and shooting static targets.
There are many clubs in Eastern PA - not sure where you are in Philly, but LPRGC (Lower Providence) runs both IDPA and USPSA. Also Clubs in Easton, Hellertown and Phillipsburg (NJ).
Always shoot DA. In a SD situation, you never want to thumb that hammer back. The adrenilen coursing through your body can easily overcome that light SA pull. If you are going to carry a revolver, get proficient using it in DA only.
If you have questions about competition, you can PM me. My son lives in Philly and sometimes (not often enough) he, or he and his wife, join me for some IDPA, you're welcome too.

Wait, I thought your finger was the only safety you need.
Joking aside, yeah, don't do it.

Thank you sprrdhawk, unclejumbo for actually being understanding. And f bomb for the laugh lol
Pizza Bob, I'm interested in getting into some of those games/competitions. I'm located in the Northeast Phila area. How much does competing in IDPA matches usually cost? I assume there's an entry fee and such?

Ooze? You had ooze? Why....when I emerged it was dust. We were so poor, we didn't have water. When I was breast feeding I was sucking out dry corn meal!! Ooze. Must be from the uppity side of town!!
You had magazines? Heck.....we had chiseled symbols on flat rocks. And gun shops? We had one old guy with 3 rifles, 1 shotgun, and 2 colt 45's all hanging on a board on his back porch!! Magazines and Gun Shops. The nerve.
