hammer bite on 1911
How many suffer with that bite from a 1911 recoiling back and hitting the web of your hand between the thumb and index finger. Is it the size of ones hands, or the grip itself. I believe the proper grip is to place that web against the bottom of the curl of the grip safety.
Me, I have to purchase a 1911 with the beavertail, or have one put if not already there. I suppose many of new 1911 shooters became disenchanted with the firearm after a few shots and bruise marks as a result.

Re: hammer bite on 1911
My biggest challenge with a 1911 is keeping the grip safety engaged while thumb is up over the thumb safety which is the "proper" 1911 grip. If I try to to skip the thumb over safety grip I end up bumping the safety on between shots. So like you I buy 1911's with nice beaver tail but also with bump out on the grip safety and an extended thumb safety like my ruger sr1911. Good luck!

Re: hammer bite on 1911
Some people manage to get slide bite either by the hammer pinching the skin between the hammer, itself, and the grip safety or from the slide riding over the web. It has to be a combination of all the above, 'cause for the life of me, I can't get the slide to hit my hand or get enough skin between the hammer and GS to get pinched, and I've tried. I guess some of you mo fos just got some meaty webs in your hands. A BTGS will definitely help you if you've got a GI GS on your 1911.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Re: hammer bite on 1911
I have long fingers and take large or sometimes XL gloves. I wouldn't say my hands are fat though. I have shot at least 8,000 rounds from a standard .45 without a beavertail. Never got bit once.
Not sure if I'm just lucky, its my grip, or beavertails are just must have tacticool hype.....
I have been bitten by other pistols though. Mostly small blowbacks. But the stock 1911 is OK for me.

Re: hammer bite on 1911
I've never been bitten by a 1911. Whenever I switch from a 1911 to a Glock, though, I get wicked nasty slide bite for the first several magazines.

Re: hammer bite on 1911
I had my gun smith stiffen up the safety on mine. Mine was getting bumped OFF safe in the holster. Scared the crap outta me.
It is now firm and a bit.
Putting it on or off safe, takes effort.
And I put on a beavertail grip safety, as well as an extended slide release.
Works well for me.American by BIRTH, Infidel by CHOICE

Re: hammer bite on 1911
If you're referring to the standard government model, then you're experiencing hammer bite. The bigger and fleshier your hands, the worse it is. A bobbed hammer helps, a beavertail eliminates the issue. I'm all for nostalgia, but I would never buy a 1911 without a beavertail safety. I shot IPSC for a couple of seasons with an unmodified GM 1911. I went to revolver for a couple more after getting tired of getting bitten.

Re: hammer bite on 1911
I do with both of my Sistema 1927 1911's, a Ballester Molina too. My other non GI 1911 has no bite... Old style GI hammer spurs=bites for me.
