HK's are a bit beyond the range I am considering $700 or less, hopefully more like $500. Idk just never had much attraction to hk firearms.

I feel ya...the FN models are nice. I haven't researched them much, being that I'm a striker fired fan.

I just went along with what you set forward:
"M current leanings are 3rd gen smith, cz 75, or beretta 96. I want .40 and railed and hammer/decocker perhaps"

Although I did not go with the .40 cal part. Polymer, in my opinion, is not a more advanced point on the same path, it is a different path, and the choice is one of personal preference. There is nothing specifically wrong with polymer, in my opinion, I just seem to feel better holding steel or alloy, and I shoot better with it, for some reason. Call me old fashioned, I have been called that before, and yet I somehow find the strength to go on.

That USP 40 Tactical Animalmother posted is a great all around pistol right out of the box. Match sights, match trigger, threaded barrel with o-ring.

Go with the CZ.....such a great gun.

And make sure to focus when you take a pic of it.

    OP,
Although I've turned into quite the FN fanboy (I have the FN FNS-9L and LOVE it), you can readily find HK USP police trade-ins for around $450. Don't count these out. Although the "sound" used, many have been shot very little...

Otherwise, definitely go CZ-75 or FN FNX or FNS.
I'm only here for the wood c-rings.

I have no qualms with used. I just want steel or alloy frame...unless the FN would pop up. Anyone here shot 2/3 of those guns? Comparisons?

Steel? You want steel? Get a Hi-Point. It will double as a club or boat anchor
Seriously, SIG, CZ both make nice guns. I personally like the Browning High Power for a steel gun. No decocker though.
