Poor mans solution (more like restrained)
Greetings all. It's been quite some time.since I last made a post. I'm a relatively old member,.but have been inactive due to military service.
My query is simple.
What can be substituted for a cleaner lubricant and protectant? Not necessarily an all in one (unless such a product exists) but rather individual products that I can purchase at every day stores such as a supermarket, or more specifically, AutoZone.
I cannot get to a gun-shop so purchasing traditional kits is out of the question. In recent threads I've seen some old timers speak of using some sort of grease.
So, tell me, what can I purchase at AutoZone that'll suit my needs for a cleaner and lubricant? I have a Gen 4 Glock 17, if that matters.

WD-40. Used it for years.

Look up "ED'S RED". It's cheap to mix it up by the gallon and it works pretty good. Just be careful with plastic stuff....
You don't have enough guns untill you don't know how many you have.

An oldie but a good site for homemade: http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm
Edit: "Just be careful with plastic stuff." I omit the acetone in Ed's Red to make it more plastic friendly.
From the original article from Ed: "Acetone is included to provide an aggressive, fast-acting solvent for caked smokeless powder residues. Because acetone readily evaporates and the fumes are harmful in high concentrations, it is recommended that it be left out if the cleaner will be used indoors, in soak tanks or in enclosed spaces lacking forced air ventilation. Containers should be kept tightly closed when not in use. ER is still effective without acetone, but not as "fast-acting."

Similar to ER, Automatic Transmission Fluid by itself makes for a decent cleaner/protectant. It's essentially motor oil but loaded up with more detergents.

Twice the mayhem, triple the force.
Ten times the action, total hardcore.

I read that WD-40 should be avoided when using it to maintain firearms.
My question is what two products can I buy in AutoZone right now that will serve as an adequate cleaner and lubricant? The lubricant is my main focus.

Re: Poor mans solution (more like restrained)
a Teflon based aerosol lubricant would serve you well. (pj1 or something along those lines)
