PA Act 235:

PA Act 235 certification is required to carry a lethal weapon incident to employment and is needed for employment as a protective patrol officer, armed security, etc. Options include With Firearms, Without Firearms, and Renewal options for both. There is a specific application process that must begin through the PA State Police, which can be found here: PA Act 235 Application Process. The process for the initial certification includes:
1) Obtain fingerprints via the PA Cogent ID system
2) Obtain physical and psychological examinations (details on State Police website)
3) Receive an approval OR denial letter from the PA State Police
--PLEASE NOTE: This letter must be obtained before registering for an Act 235 course--
4) Schedule the desired course (initial OR renewal, With or Without firearms)
5) Mail a $30 certification check to the PA State Police

The process for renewals is similar, but a renewal notice will be mailed to you 8 months prior to certificate expiration with details about how to renew. More information about the renewal process can be found here:
