Opinions please on which revolver?

Here's my dilemma: I've got a S&W hand ejector 38 spl. (5 screw, 4 inch barrel) that dates from 1928. It's in 98 % condition. I love it, it shoots like a laser for me. I have the opportunity to buy a pre-owned Ruger Alaskan 454, which is a rare bird in itself. I've really wanted one of these for a LONG time. The catch: the only way I can acquire the Alaskan is if I trade the S&W. (That's the situation, and no, I cannot buy the Alaskan AND keep the Smith---if only it were a perfect world).

Question: should I keep the S&W, or trade it for the Alaskan 454?? Neither of these guns (in this condition) are common. Mind you I already have a Ruger SBH in 44 mag (3.75 inch barrel).

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. What would you do?

I've seen Alaskans at lgs in the last year. Can't say that for a Smith like that. Just saying :-)

Do you have any other guns? A 38 is much easier and cheaper gun to shoot over a 454.

I would hang on to the classic S&W, myself.

I too, really like the Alaskan 454 - but mainly for kicks and giggles - I doubt that you would really shoot it all that much. The 38 is much more friendly, and is a keeper in it's own right.

How about keeping the S&W and trading the SBH which is fairly common in exchange for the Alaskan?
