So, I'm in a College Gun Control Debate
Hello everyone.
I'm a student at Pitt. Greensburg campus, and was asked to take part in a gun control debate between the College Dems. club and College Action Sports club, which I am the president of.
...It started off as a debate between the (D)'s and (R)'s but the (R)'s have a history of not showing up and my group was asked to take the space.
We will be the 'Pro-Gun' side of the debate.
I'm new the this forum and have only been a gun owner for a few months now, so my experience and knowledge is limited. I have been reading almost every thread on here since I joined up, but there is still so much information out there.
I'm not asking anyone to do all the work for me. I plan to gather what information I can from searching, but while I'm doing that I thought I might as well ask for advice and insight.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Edit- The debate is at the end of Feb.
Second Edit:
Posted this on the last page, thought it should go here too-
Just wanted to post an update:
I'm not longer in charge of the debate, or in a position above anyone else involved. We have all become general population.
It was changed making it open to everyone instead of just the two clubs, probably due to lack of people wanting to take the anti side. At any rate I'm not going to lose any sleep over the new format.
I did learn a lot from the articles posted and plan on reading what is left, and also to make as many good points as I can during the event.Last edited by Torch; February 9th, 2007 at 05:11 PM.

http://www.gunfacts.info/ is a great site.

Google John Lott Jr., he has written numerous books and has pretty much refuted all the Brady "statistics" with actual real data showing that more guns actually decrease crime.
Come to think of it I think one of his books is called "More Guns Less Crime"
Good luck!

Re: So, I'm in a College Gun Control Debate
I have no links to share that than from my own head.
The premise of the debated needs to be rejected. Pro / Anti Gun is beyond silly. Every Pro statistic or cute quote will be countered by a opposing statistic and equally cute rebuttal.
If we could wish it, who would not want a world with no pain, no crime, no tyranny, no evil? I've had always said that I would agree to give up all of my guns. My only stipulation would be that I would be the last one to do so.
We are not Pro Gun, sorry... Pro the 2nd Amendment because we like to put holes in paper (as much fun as that may be). We are Pro the 2A because we are against tyranny. We are Pro the 2A because we are against evil. We are Pro the 2A because we are against a powerful group (government) oppressing the innocent.
Its all a false unwinable debate that can never be won so should never be fought. Even if crime could be reduced by XX% if all guns were banned we should still be against a ban because a nut with a AK can only kill maybe 10 or 20, maybe 100. Only a government with unlimited power can kill millions. I'll take my chances against the AK nut any day of the week.
It is all a basic question of Power and in which hand that Power rests. The Founders well understood this and said that the Power should be with the people, not the king. And I agree.
Once we are ruled by Saints instead of Men then we can discuss giving up all of our weapons. Until that day a armed citizen is the best defense against tyranny and evil. We do not distrust the government because they are armed, we are armed because we distrust the government.
This whole Pro / Anti debate is a tool of misdirection that you will never win. I beg you not to fall into the trap. Do not be Pro Anything. Stand only against Tyranny!Last edited by phillyd2; January 31st, 2007 at 05:57 PM.
