Hearing Protection for the Hearing Impaired
Father in law just bought a handgun and wants to go to the range for the first time in 40 yrs. He wears hearing aids.. What's the best protection for him. Shoud he take them out and use plugs or ear covers? Or should he leave them and use ear covers?

Re: Hearing Protection for the Hearing Impaired
I take them out and use "Wolf's Ears" types of headsets. They are amplified when ambient noise is low, and cut off sound above a certain decibel level. I've also used such as part of my home defense system - quicker than inserting hearing aids.
Know your audience. Don't try to sell a Prius at a Monster Truck Rally.

Re: Hearing Protection for the Hearing Impaired
Just takes the aids out and put on any standard set of muffs.
This is the cheapest and most effective way.
This from experience....

Re: Hearing Protection for the Hearing Impaired
I had a permanent loss in my right ear and now use Howard Leight electronic muffs to hunt and shoot. They work well, and even keep my ears warm. I don't know the degree of his loss, but he could put standard foam plugs in then the muffs overtop. The muffs give a level of amplification to aid hearing speech with the plugs in, then cut out at impulses over about 85db. The dual protection would virtually guarantee he conserves what he has left.

Re: Hearing Protection for the Hearing Impaired
I have a pair of HL Impact Sport ear pro and have been impressed. They amplify sound more than I expected but reduce sharp decibels quick. I can hear every command and creak but have yet to have my ears ring. The automatic shut off and audio jack are nice features as well.

I don't like sticking things in my ear. I use a pair of ex-Air Force Mickey Mouse ear protectors. I figure if they work on the flight line, they can do equally as well on the firing line.
