Re: Straw purchase or not?
This laziness of just making up words seems harmless... Until these made up words get printed into poorly written and legally binding laws.
Assault rifle, assault gun, assault weapon, etc who cares right?
All the same? Yea, until "assault weapon" was put into law which described pretty much any rifle with black paint on it for a decade of our lives.
Tomato tomoto is fine... Until the language laziness makes your vegetable garden illegalLast edited by BimmerJon; November 30th, 2014 at 11:41 AM.

Re: Straw purchase or not?
The correct term is "straw man purchase" and it isn't a political term but one that has been used in legal and debating circles for many years. Straw man refers to something that isn't what it seems to be.
Sadly, neither the public nor the journalists are smart enough to use the correct phrase.

Re: Straw purchase or not?
I'd like to know why stupid people turned "straw man purchase" which makes sense into "straw purchase" which makes no sense.

Re: Straw purchase or not?
Guess SCOTUS didn't get the memo (N.B. particularly the second reference to "the straw" as one who performs a "straw purchase") :
To ensure the accuracy of those submissions, a federal statute imposes criminal penalties on any person who, in connection with a firearm's acquisition, makes false statements about "any fact material to the lawfulness of the sale." 18 U.S.C. § 922(a)(6). In this case, we consider how that law applies to a so-called straw purchaser — namely, a person who buys a gun on someone else's behalf while falsely claiming that it is for himself. We hold that such a misrepresentation is punishable under the statute, whether or not the true buyer could have purchased the gun without the straw.IANAL
