Man allegedly threatened people downtown with crossbow

WILKES-BARRE — A man was arrested after he allegedly threatened people walking downtown with a loaded crossbow.

Police were dispatched to South Main Street at about 5:20 p.m. for a report of a male wearing a poncho and carrying a loaded crossbow.

Reports were made that the male had fired the crossbow at a moving vehicle and pointed it at several people.

Officers located the male, identified as Joseph Warnagiris, 29, of Wilkes-Barre, who had his hands hidden under his poncho, police said.

Officers ordered Warnagiris to show his hands, and he dropped the crossbow from under the poncho but allegedly refused to show his hands, police said.

At that point, Warnagiris was stunned with a Taser and taken into custody.

Officers believed from speaking with Warnagiris that he was mentally unstable and took him to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Warnagiris was charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, reckless endangering another person, simple assault, propulsion of missiles onto roadway and disorderly conduct, police said.
