Man allegedly threatened people downtown with crossbow

WILKES-BARRE — A man was arrested after he allegedly threatened people walking downtown with a loaded crossbow.

Police were dispatched to South Main Street at about 5:20 p.m. for a report of a male wearing a poncho and carrying a loaded crossbow.

Reports were made that the male had fired the crossbow at a moving vehicle and pointed it at several people.

Officers located the male, identified as Joseph Warnagiris, 29, of Wilkes-Barre, who had his hands hidden under his poncho, police said.

Officers ordered Warnagiris to show his hands, and he dropped the crossbow from under the poncho but allegedly refused to show his hands, police said.

At that point, Warnagiris was stunned with a Taser and taken into custody.

Officers believed from speaking with Warnagiris that he was mentally unstable and took him to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Warnagiris was charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, reckless endangering another person, simple assault, propulsion of missiles onto roadway and disorderly conduct, police said.

If that's true, then we have nothing to fear, he couldn't hit anything.

Similar to how the media misrepresents firearms, they are doing it in this story as well.

From the story, how many people will picture Daryl Dixon with a Barnett crossbow. In reality, it was a crazy guy with a handheld "pistol" crossbow you can get for <$40 on Amazon.

I'm guessing the guy's choice of weapon was fortunate for him. If it were a full size crossbow, the cops probably would have shot him with more than a taser.

I'd hate like hell to have cause to fire on someone just because they are loony, but a carrier could have made the eventual outcome very, very bad for this guy.

hey i have one of those #80 pounder pistol cross bows, they pump out those cheap assed darts with authority. In a shtf scenario, I would not want to get one of those in the guts and die 3 days later of abdominal sepsis from a perforated bowel pumping poop juice where it dont belong..
