This may sound a little retarded, but there is a method to my madness, so please bear with me.

Ok, the SHHTF. It's chaos out there and businesses are basically on hold. You can pick one pistol to use for you protection. Keep in mind you may not have access to things that would keep your pistol running optimally. You may also have to use your pistol, frequently. You are going to have to endure hot, dusty conditions as well as cold, wet conditions (and some hot, muddy conditions, to boot), and bear in mind, you have not the things to keep your pistol clean or protected. You will also not have any access to parts to replace if they break on your side arm.

What is the one pistol you will trust the most for this situation? (please forgive if we've done this, before, as I got nothing on the 'search')

Understand that this thread just started, but why not a wheelgun, like a Ruger GP100 in .38/.357?

I have heard from a very reliable source that the HIPOINT can be used as a BLUGEON when it stops working Actually my 1911 will be my choice, I can always collect others weapons after, as long as there are rags, oil, and basic tools to be found all around you will always have what you need. The biggest/best weapon anyone has is that blob of grey matter behind your eyes.

Under the conditions you've described (no cleaning gear and no spare parts), there is no "best" pistol.

All manufacturers are capable of producing a "lemon" now and again. And "mean time between failures" as measured by "round count" is no guarantee. IOW, at no specific "round count" can one declare "my pistol is GTG" because most manufacturers now sub-contract many of their parts and therefore do not have 100% control over their quality.

They have to rely instead on the specifications they submit to the sub-contractor and the sub-contractor adhering to their specs and quality procedures. As a result, oftentimes component parts are not of the same or similar vintage. For example, Ruger frequently offers "special runs" to use up supplies of parts from discontinued versions.

However, to answer your question generally, I would not want a "competition tight" frame-to-slide fit. And I would definitely want a pistol manufactured by a tier 1 company.
