Is this something I should try on my 1911?

My Colt 1911 shoots left. The rear sight appears adjustable for windage so I think it should be moved left. Is this something I can do at home using common garage tools? I was thinking of using a punch but don't know how to safely secure the gun?

Wouldn't you have to move the rear sight to the right if it shoots left?

If you want your shot to move to the right, move the rear sight to the right.

It shouldn't hurt anything (no I won't pay for self repair issues if it doesn't! Lol!) I've tapped a couple of sights before without issues, and yes rear sight moves the way you want to move the poi. Front sight is opposite direction. I usually hold my hands in line then move the one that would correspond to the sight I'm moving. It will show you which way you want to move it.

As others have said, drift the rear sight in the direction you wish to adjust your point of impact. Personally, being the high tech redneck gunsmith that I am, I put the slide between two pieces of 2 by 4 and secure it in a vice. Get your punch, and VERY carefully tap the rear aight over.

If you're not feeling that froggy, take it to a gun shop or a local smith. They will charge very little, if anything at all, to do it.

1- Pad the slide in a couple layers of cloth or cardboard & put it in a vice. 2- Mark the dovetail on both sides of the sight with a sharp pencil, so you'll know where your starting point is. 3- Put a couple layers of duct tape over the end of a punch & tap the rear site in the direction you want to move the poi.

Yes I should have said that it would be a good idea to pad it up a little. Lol

STOP!!! Brass drift NOT steel punch. Tape will do squat. Wipe the brass transfer off with hoppies number 9. Or buy a sight pusher. Thick lead liners for your vice, and don't bend in the rails.
