    Default Uplander

Nice Rooster this morning, and got him with a double barrel 16 gauge I never fired, bought it a few years back for 250.00.

Its not a Fox, but an Eastern Arms 101.7, I believe it was a Stevens roll off, 1912-1915 or so. The fella I got it off had a Ithaca 37 featherweight 16 gauge and this side by side, I gave him 500 for both. The 37 I would put at a 5, and more a rainy day gun, I would put this one close to a 7 or 8, its still very tight to break open, no rust, and bluing is good, wood is decent, but someone chipped the butt on the stock, and has some filler, hardly noticeable unless ya really look it over.
Had it 2 years and this was the first I shot it, feels better to me on quick shots than my 37's or my Mossy 835, I just got an 870, but that feels long to me as well.. I am more of a grouse hunter, more hunting them than eating them I'm afraid..

I always wanted a double 16, but the cost of any classics, kind of put me out of the picture, and the new ones seem far and few in between.

I put the bird is scalding water, 160 degrees, 30 seconds, let him drain, 30 more, drain, 30 more, drain.. and the feathers almost just rolled out.

Thanks Gump, it just feels a lot more comfortable than my 12 gauges, years back, I read the 16's where more of a beefy load in a 20 gauge frame..
I have to spread some rep! LOL
I spent a few hours Sunday talking to landowners, 3 out of 4 game me permission to hunt, most older retired farmers. I picked each of them up a half gallon of fresh pressed apple cider this afternoon, and have a few stops tomorrow.. I got about 80% of the pheasant feathers and took them over to the Fishing and gun shop when I got the cider, and gave them to the owner, thinking he may know someone that ties flies, he gladly accepted them. He's a new owner and cut me a break of 5 transfers @80.00 last month..

    Thank you,
    ~Tol

I love taking the 16 out for pheasant or grouse. I'll even hunt some doves on occasion with it.

Likely a stocky, have not seen a native Pheasant in these parts so long I almost feel guilty for shooting it! Too many predators, and not enough family farming any longer.
