M1917 Rifle Restoration.
So......I had been in the market for an M1917. Found one at Cabela's in moderate shape for $329.00.
Sights had been cut/ sporterized. A lot of rust on exterior metal. Original stock. Original barrel (stamped 9-18). Rifle manufactured by Remington in October, 1918.
So I: Replaced butt plate assembly, replaced rear sling swivel assembly, replaced rear sight assembly, replaced front sight assembly, replaced lower band, replaced upper band, replaced trigger guard assembly, to include floor plate and sub components. Replaced missing stacking swivel.
All replacement parts are original, manufactured by Eddystone.
Had to do some grinding, cutting, drilling to get some screws off. My Dremel was definitely a huge help.
Treated stock with tung oil.
Reproduction M1907 sling.
She is a beauty..........A Republic, if you can keep it.

Re: M1917 Rifle Restoration.
Just the sight itself was cut up, not the housing. Replaced the sight itself, screw and nut that hold it in place. leaf spring and the leaf spring screw. Sight screw, leaf spring and retaining screw were rusted in place. A challenge to get old parts off without damaging anything. But, took my time.
A Republic, if you can keep it.

Re: M1917 Rifle Restoration.
That old warhorse looks really nice.
I remember in the 90s when P-14 and P-17 rifles could be had for really cheap. There were so common that some companies were selling them as sporters and rebarrelling them into magnum calibers like the 7mm and 300 Winchester mag. Now of course the original guns are the ones people want.
I really like the P-17 in .30-06. It really tames the recoil of the '06 round and and is very easy to shoot well with the peep sights. No wonder Sgt. York liked his so much. I actually think it is a better rifle than the 03 Springfield.
