I guess I'm crazy. Back in 82 I took a pistol to a gunsmith to have a stripped out grip screw replaced and didn't get a written estimate or anything.

I am not certified to judge your sanity, but I am willing to bet if your smith told you the same things that this fallacy story described you would not have paid what the story describes. When you are getting work done a ballpark figure is a good way to judge how much money to bring or to judge if you are getting ripped off. The government operates without bids or estimates that's why we are broke.

Seriously, there isn't a legitimate gunsmith in the world that would do that much to a rifle with out being asked to. The chances of not getting paid are way to high to exert all the time and energy.

Honestly this will be the last time I ask for gun help on a GUN forum. This isn't a BS story. This is a legit real things that's happening and I'm worried because I'll probably just have to use the insurance money to replace it. Everytime I google cost of glass bedding it says $200ish. I have no idea what could of caused this amount of work. I have 0 experience with gunsmiths or insurance stuff so I'm sorry I asked you for help. I wanted to pass this rifle onto my kids and i took pride in it. Now some bozo is charging 3 times it's value for repairs and he never okayed anything with me. I'm already super down by being in this situation. Thanks for kicking me while I'm down when all I did was asked for help

The smith that I use doesn't always give a written estimate. He does always have me fill out a paper describing what the problem is and what I would like done. He also always asks me how far I want to go to fix something if he thinks it will be overly expensive for the value of the gun. He also always gives me a ball park figure if he knows exactly what the problem is. He usually comes in under what he quotes me but, at least I know about how much I'm going to be into something before he does any work.

While I don't know if all gunsmiths work, most I have seen have you at least fill out something describing the problem that needs to be addressed so they can reference it before they do the work that was asked, especially if they are busy.

Why is everyone so hard on him? if you think his posts are bullshit, just dont comment on them. Shit like this does happen. Drop your car off at jiffy lube for an oil change, see what they do, or try to do to your car.

I would go in and ask to see it. Then I would explain that what I asked for, and what a reasonable price to pay for what I asked for would be, based on your checking around. Then I would drop a check for that amount on the counter. Explain that if he expects more, for work that was neither asked for nor authorized, he can take you to court. Then I would leave. If he tried to stop me, I would call the police.

If possible, go in with proof of ownership.
