Default Giving a rifle as a gift to a friend's son

My good friend's son is turning 8 this weekend and I have an old bolt action 22 rifle that I think I may have touched twice in the last 5 years and probably shot last 10 years ago. He was amped up about going shooting and, obviously, I'm going to clear it with both his folks before I do anything. But I wonder is there anything on the legal side I need to do before I hand it over. Being a rifle it shouldn't have to be transferred in any way I'm assuming. Should I still have my buddy sign a quick something with both our names on it just in case?

I don't really know if an 8 year old can truly own anything themselves. I would assume their parents have complete control over anything they "own".

However to give the long gun to the boys father requires no transfer, assuming he is a PA resident.

While not required I would make up a bill of sale with a $0.00 price. While I doubt your buddy would use it in a crime down the road you never know what will happen once it leaves his hands. Its not like .22 rifles are used in crimes often, but a bill of sale requires minimal effort.

PA has no minimum age to own long guns, and neither does federal law. Legally you can give a shotgun or rifle to an infant that was freshly squeezed from the vag(or asshole if they are a future politician).

But of course, parental consent is important - so if your friend is ok with you giving a gun to his son there is nothing to worry about.

A receipt is a good thing, but not necessary.

    That's what I thought.

I've known him and his wife for going on 8 or 9 years by this point so I highly, highly doubt it would be used in a nefarious way. I can't wait to see his expression when he gets it. His mom texts me and says "He's gonna pee his pants!"

Nice gift but write up a receipt regardless(maybe in the form of a card). It is a CYA type of world. I am sure they are a good family, but burglaries happen all the time.
