stolen/returned handgun
My father had a handgun stolen and eventually returned after being found by police department. However the serial number had been removed. Apparently the police did not notice or in any event did not mention it. My father has given me the gun. I have original paperwork when gun was purchased. I understand your not supposed to have a gun without a serial number. However I have to believe there is a course of action in this situation to restore the serial number and legality of possession of this firearm.
Thought?

Do you know the serial number?
I'm sure a gunsmith could etch it back on but you'd probably have to prove it.

Stray thought: How could the police verify that the found pistol is indeed your fathers, without confirming the serial?

Re: stolen/returned handgun
Both my Glocks have the SN in multiple places. One on the receiver, where it's required to be by law, one on the barrel and one on the slide. Maybe this is something similar.
Regardless, I wouldn't want a firearm with an obliterated serial number in my possession. Too many ways that can end up very badly.Rules are written in the stone,

Re: stolen/returned handgun
Either destroy it or put it in a place nobody will find it, it's a felony to have the obliterated serial number. Depending on what it is, you could possibly get a new receiver and transfer parts...

Re: stolen/returned handgun
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you contact either the local or state police and they will issue you a serial number to be engraved? Now I understand you'd have to be able to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt the gun is legit, but I was under the impression you can get this type of thing done on an heirloom gun? But again, I have no first hand knowledge, so that's a pretty big grain of salt.

Re: stolen/returned handgun
Does the original paperwork have the serial number on it that can be etched into the gun?
Just a thought.
God bless!!

Re: stolen/returned handgun
The Police could not have returned a Gun with the Serial # removed! How else would they have know who it belonged too? Most guns have more than one Serial #. Criminal are not the brightest.
I just saw a Gun that a guy tried to scratch off the Serial#. (Police recovered) One problem he missed two other places the # was placed.Aggies Coach Really ??? Take off the tin foil bro.

Talk to the police who gave your father back his gun.
