There is an exception to the prohibition of 18 Pa CS 6106:

18 Pa CS 6106(b)(12) A person who has a lawfully issued license to carry a firearm pursuant to section 6109 (relating to licenses) and that said license expired within six months prior to the date of arrest and that the individual is otherwise eligible for renewal of the license.
Does not work for the Federal Gun Free School Zone. May not be well known to LE in the field so there is the potential for some inconvenience on your part.

When my LTCF expired, my wife had just died and I was going into the hospital for open heart surgery. I e-mailed the sheriff's office to confirm that they would honor the grace period and allow me to renew after the expiration date. This was Centre County. Seriff Danny Nau answered my e-mail personally and confirmed that I would not encounter any problems.

And I didn't. Half an hour, in and out -- with two people ahead of me when I walked in the door.

It starts with, "date of arrest," so a cop may think he has to arrest you. It ends with, "and that the individual is otherwise eligible for renewal of the license" which a cop can't determine, since it's the Sheriff's job to conduct the investigation and I'm not even sure cops can run a NICS check on something like this.

So, I think there is a reasonable chance of a cop throwing you in jail to have the judge sort it out, depending on the cop.

I have carried on an expired license under this exception but I was discrete. I knew the chances of an incident (outside of me having to shoot somebody) were remote, it would likely come out in the wash (with a hearing), but there was a tiny chance it could screw up a weekend really bad.

I chose not to take the chance. From the time I got out of the hospital until when the doctors allowed me to drive again, I had my 1911 in the house but I left it there any time I went anywhere, until I could get the LTCF renewed.

Luzerne County is back to a scrap of paper with a 3rd grade style piece of sticky plastic "laminate" over it. The Deputy Sheriff literally just folded the plastic over the paper and pressed it flat by hand. I guess that's what happens when the county is so broke that Staples cut off their account.

My Kindergartener's badge with her bus number is of higher quality, and it is just to help ensure the kids get on the right bus for the first 2 weeks of school.
