Re: Questions on 1911’s - lots of options
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Re: Questions on 1911’s - lots of options
Unless your looking for accuracy to be paramount don't spend a lot of money. Go with the Rock Island and be happy.
They have a good rep and are accurate for what they are. You could spend thousands and have a great gun, but then your going to not want to shoot it most likely and it becomes a safe queen.
What's the point in that...
Now if your going to go into competition shooting then yes I'd spend more because your going to want a rig that can handle the stress of shooting over 100 plus rounds a week.
But for plain old target practice then a Rock Island will do you well. Save the extra money for mags and ammo and new sights if you want to swap them out. Plus you wont care as much if it gets dinged up.

Re: Questions on 1911’s - lots of options
A quality, stock 1911 is plenty accurate for the average shooter. If you want it to target shoot, you need the pistol to have adjustable sights. There were suggestions for a Springfield Range Officer and that is a quality pistol for a very fair price. One the other end someone suggested a Cabot. Great pistols but cost $5K and up. Here is a target shot standing @ 25 yards with a stock Springfield with the only modification was a trigger job to get it to 3.5 lbs. It takes a pretty good shooter to out shoot a quality, stock 1911 regardless what you pay. YMMV

I have two Shooter Arms 1911's that I paid less than 800 for both! A Military model and a Commodore model. Both shoot and look great!
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise

In my opinion the Ruger SR1911 is the best budget/mid-level 1911 out there. American made, great looks, and FANTASTIC trigger.
The Taurus 1911 is pretty nice as well if you can get a good deal on it (<$500). Better sights than the RIA and a forged frame opposed to cast. Lifetime warranty and free extension on your NRA membership.

Re: Questions on 1911’s - lots of options
Love my RIA. A real looker or finely finished piece, it is not, but it is accurate, cheap, and a helluva lotta fun to shoot. You will not find a better value for a fun, knock aorund gun.
I paid $450 OTD for mine with 2 boxes of ammo and 2 mags, and there was a $50 rebate on top of that. Use the $50 for ammo and mags. The factory mags leave much to be desired. When in doubt, knifehand!

RIA Tactical 45. Really one of the best values out there. Lifetime warranty with outstanding customer service. I have both the 45 & 9MM. Both are incredibly accurate. Neither one has had any failures of any kind & I use the stock mags. The 9mm has over a 1000 rds through it. The 45 has close to 1000.

Re: Questions on 1911’s - lots of options
I've owned a few 1911's and they are great. You can spend a little or a whole lot on a 1911 as you very well know.
I was at The Handgunner today and had my first opportunity to look at the Ruger SR1911CMD. I really like that pistol. I typically carry a Government model which isn't bad, but the commander is a little smaller/lighter.
I'm not a Ruger fan in general, but Ruger seemed to have a winner with the SR1911.
I also was look at Rock Island Armory aka RIA because RIA has a 10mm option for around $600. You get a lot of features with the RIA tactical models and right now, RIA has a $50 rebate til 10/15/14.
I'm torn as I want a 10mm which I'd get the RIA, but that Ruger SR1911CMD is sweet.
OP, you are fortunate to have so many options for your first 1911.
Don't rule out 1911s made in the Philippines as they produce quite a few 1911s in that country. Metro Arms...their American Classic Commander is priced right as well.

My dad is buying a new para expert tomorrow on sale for $439. And para is offering a $100 mail in rebate. So it will be about $360 final price.
