Moving to Pittsburgh Area

I just received a job offer in Pittsburgh today. Ill initially probably commute from the central PA area until I can find something out there. Id prefer to live outside of the city. I was wondering what areas I should look into as I have children in school so a good school district is a huge plus. Ill initially be looking to rent until I find something to buy. Is finding a place that allows dogs difficult out there. If choosing the city are there any better areas to look at?

No kids here, so I can't really comment on school districts, but depending on where you'll be working, getting to/from the city is usually not too hard to do from "outside" the city.

You'll find that you don't have to go too far from downtown to find an area with a more "rural" feel.

Welcome to the 'Burgh. Best school districts will be Hampton and North Allegheny in the north and Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon in the south. In both cases you can live anywhere from 10-30 minutes out of the city depending on how "rural" you want to get. I like the north personally but both (north and south of the city) have their pros and cons. Stay away from the east (Monroeville/Murrysville) IMO as the commute can be a real PITA.

Welcome and remember as a rule of thumb, the North Hills are nice, the South Hills are nice but don't look into moving into the East Hills unless you like being shot at...

I will second everything Bearpack said.. I am a big Hampton fan. They have an outstanding school district .. outstanding parks and recreation.. minutes from North Park.. 20 mins to Monroeville... 20 mins to cranberry .. 20 mins to McKnight Shopping.. 20 mins to downtown... 20 mins to Lawrenceville....20 mins to Butler. Did I say 20 mins?

Plus a turnpike exit.... lol

I'm a fan of the South Hills. Plenty of entertainment and good schools.

I have to recommend Upper St. Clair. I may be biased though as I work for the school district.
