From the FAQ section on the PA Fish and Boat commission website:

    10. Can I kill a timber rattlesnake or any snake with a firearm?
No, it is now unlawful to take, catch, or kill a reptile or amphibian through the use of a firearm.

I wonder what other stupid laws we have that no one gives a fuck about. Jaywalking, carrying a knife in Philly, shearing a sheep after midnight..

Carrying a knife in Philly, not being able to have a long gun in a car unless doing a list of "pre approved" things or having an LTCF, the drinking age, illegal to sleep in a refrigerator in Pittsburgh, etc..

The refrigerator one really sucks. I love sleeping in refrigerators!

If you haven't figured it out yet everybody pretends to be Mr.Law&Order on the interweb.

In real life however they're obeying depends largely on convenience and the proximity of Johnny Law.

In PA there is a common water snake which looks identical to a copperhead except for the size and shape of the head.
The question is, will you be on your feet or your knees?

PA Fish and Boat Commission regulations provide that a person may kill a venomous snake in defense of life and limb. This can be done regardless of the season. However, by law a person must report to the Commission in writing within 5 days, that such a killing occurred. Persons killing a venomous snake in defense of life and limb are not permitted to retain the snake. So, you would not be able to keep the snake and get it mounted.

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission is charged with aquatic invertebrate, fish, reptile, and amphibian management.

If we had poisonous snakes that were also aggressive like cottonmouths are down south, I might just agree that a snake gun was warranted, and I emphasize the word "might". Here in PA, there is absolutely no need to carry a gun specifically to shoot snakes. Not rattlesnakes. Not copperheads. Not northern water snakes. Not rat snakes. It just isn't necessary.

If you have a high density of snakes around it means that you have a high density of snake food around, right? Snakes gotta eat. As mentioned upthread, snakes keep the rodent population down. Now this is important not only to keep down the chance of getting one of the present, but infrequent diseases like plague or Hanta (both of which are present in the rodent population in PA), but more importantly, keeping down the pooulation of rodents keeps down the amount of reservoir hosts for the whole range of tick-borne diseases, Lyme disease being the most widely known.
