I'm still on active duty so I've had no need to go to the VA since returning from Iraq in 2007 so I have not seen the gun locks. If I had to guess, I'd say this is probably part of their suicide prevention program. The suicide rate has skyrocketed with politicians and Pentagon brass screaming for preventive policies to be established.

If this is part of a suicide prevention program it would be the typical knee-jerk reaction of US bureaucracy. A gun lock is great for keeping the curious (kids) from loading and negligently discharging a round as long as the keys are secure. Beyond that they do not stop theft, they do not stop suicide, and they don't have an impact on the crime rate.

Tried to put a trigger lock on an M-240-B but it didn't seem to work.

Do not think for a moment that the primary reason this agency is worried about your safety is not simply data collection.

( Lots of cussing etc.) Anyone else get one of these? My 1st thought is of course hell no I don't want my name on any more lists than it might already be on.

    Any thoughts or comments?
It's making the rounds at our shop. Just throw the letter in the trash and forget it. I think it's just a fishing expedition.

I don't mind the free gun lock programs as long as they are anonymous and are raised by private donations and not taxpayer money. But by the VA having you request them that throws up some major red flags with creating a database of veteran gun owners and a waste of taxpayer money.

I used them before I had a gun cabinet. Now they sit in the original box that my firearms came in because I'm I have a compulsion to keep all that stuff. My AR was the last purchase before I got a cabinet and I did purchase a mag block. I could probably sell it for 5-10 bucks but its more worth for the few times I take the AR out for more than just a range trip.

    Nobody will buy them.

I was working at a VA and they had a cop with a table setup giving them away. I thought of grabbing a bunch but then I realized nobody I knew would want them so i left them.
