    Default Dixon's (32nd Annual) Gunmaker’s Fair – 2014

This show is entirely about black powder weapons, muzzleloaders for the most part. There's classes, displays, sale tables and a barn full of antiques for folks-not-interested-in-weapons.

Runs Friday to Sunday, schedule here

I don't own a black powder gun or ever even shot one. But I do have an appreciation of our history and the skills that enabled these guns to be built. I missed going last year after many years of the event, but will be there tomorrow.

It is fascinating to watch a long rifle starting as a blank of wood, all the the skill and patience it takes to fit to the barrel and other metal parts. We have watched the process of scrimshaw i think it is called in the absolute fine engraving on the powder horns.

There are folks there who make the side metal brass plates not sure of the part name and engrave them. We watched a 'cook' at the old covered wagon bake a pie over a wood coal fire.

And the process among others I will certainly see is to watch how rifling in put into a barrel with what I call primitive tools. And so much more. Positively fascinating stuff to see. Looking forward to the trip, it gets better every time.

The grass is all cut, the last of the woodpile was split and stacked today, time for a day out for me and the bride. And might even find something I want that I did not know I needed..
