    Default I'm just curious.

    Hey everyone,

I was wondering, has anything heard of any looting/breakdown of law & order in the flood zones?

If so, can we take that as a sign of imrpoved government response (state, federal, or local level), or a cultural difference (rural vs. urban, midwest vs. south, etc?)

    I'm really curious about this.

I've not heard about any looting, need for martial law, etc...

I highly doubt it's a factor of better government response but likely determined by the caliber of people the flood has affected.

I can see how that argument could be made, yeah.

Just one of those things that I can't wonder about in my "Environment of Academic Freedom" because yeah, someone might get offended.

    Sad, Ain't it?

Only one had surfaced so far. Perp was hit in the head with a shovel while leaving a home with a load of belongings. There is no comparison to the New Orleans fiasco. First the widespread scocio-economic conditions of N.O. simply don't exist upriver. Secondly, local and state governments reacted swiftly. Not so in N.O. and Louisiana. They sat on their hands.

The initial responses are the responsibility of the locals and NOT the federal government. FEMA took a lot of flack that rightly belonged to the state and city governments.

It is an interesting , but unhappy situation these people lost much and they are being stoic and trying their best to recover. I may have missed any outpouring of requests for food money and other necessary items in this type of disaster, from what I saw of the flood pictures it was extensive damage.

Of course it was not an iconic city like N.O , but still there are many people suffering !

I think it is a mixture of both. Yes, there have been reports of minor looting, but nothing major. I think that you have to understand that the people in New Orleans are a completely different breed! (not all of them... you know the ones im talking about). With that extreme poverty, you are bound to be left with a group of people who aren't too bright and who will resort to crime.
But we also have to remember that there was no delay in a government response this time around. I do not attribute this to race or anything, but to experience. After New Orleans, the infrastructure was reorganized and many changes were made.
