    Default Presidential requirements?

Years ago a black person and women were not allowed to vote.
What Amendment or law has made it possible for one of these to run for President of the United States today?

Lol, wut? Black citizens and women were never ineligible under the Constitution (Article II, Section 1) to become president:

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.
The 14th Amendment ensured that all black persons born in the nation are citizens.

As to voting laws, those are determined by the several states, subject only to the limits imposed by the Constitution and the lawful acts of Congress to "guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government".

So, they couldn't vote but they could become President of the United States?

The question seems valid on its face. How it is answered could present clear issues for the future of the way we approach law.

So blacks and women could become President in 1781 but couldn't vote until 1870 (blacks) and 1920 (women)???????

I personally take great offense to this, so I was going to say male chauvinist pigs, bigots and any other name that came to mind. I was going to quote from the records of Tammany Hall where YES they allowed Black men to vote in the mid 1800's, but thought better of it.

    So here ya go...
    19th Amendment
Passed by Congress June 4, 1919.
    Ratified August 18, 1920.
Section 1: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Section 2: Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

U.S. Constitution: Article II Section 1: No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. This says nothing about gender or race.

Yes, at least in legal theory. As far as I know, there were no LAWS that prevented a black citizen or a female citizen from becoming president. And, IIRC, the Supreme Court ruled that the list of qualifications given in Section 1 of Article II is exhaustive: Congress cannot impose additional qualifications even if it wanted to, except by duly amending the Constitution (as they did to impose a term limit).

So that settles it. Women and African Americans have always been legally allowed to run for president.
