Soliciting Advice on De-Spurring a Snubby
I sometimes carry a S and W Mdl 60 in a pocket holster. As you know, the hammer has the potential to catch on a fast draw, especially under stress.
I am considering removing the spur, but leaving as much mass as possible to minimize the potential of catching. Some shooters have told me this is a good idea; but 2 friends told me that removing the spur has the potential to result in misfires due to lighter hammer strike.
I'm wondering if any members have tried this mod., and if they had any misfire problems subsequesnt to this.
Thanks

Re: Soliciting Advice on De-Spurring a Snubby
I did it to my Ruger SP101 and never had an issue.

There's not too much risk involved in trying. I would personally buy a second hammer before the mod and work with that one. That way if it doesn't work out you could just put the original back.

Re: Soliciting Advice on De-Spurring a Snubby
In Bill Jordon's book, "No Second Place Winner", he describes three things he did to his carry snubby:
Removed the hammer spur while leaving enough of the remaining top surface as possible to enable cocking the hammer. This was accomplished by squeezing the trigger in double-action fashion until the thumb can get a grip on the remaining hammer to set up a single-action shot if desired.
Put smooth grips on the gun. Reason.... grabbing a gun fast in a SHTF situation is highly likely to result in a less than optimum grip on the gun. A smooth set of grips allows a quick adjustment in the hand versus a textured grip introducing an interference.
Thin the trigger guard by a third at the spot where your trigger finger touches the guard. Thinning the guard at that section on that side gives an edge to getting the finger to the trigger faster.
I did these things to my Colt Detective Special (2-inch snubby). Never had a fail to fire from the bobbed hammer on any variety of ammo.

Simpler solution that I use on my Taurus 85 in a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster.
Put your thumb over the hammer. Draw. Done.
Its cheap, and no grinding or spare partsgotta love her ;)

Re: Soliciting Advice on De-Spurring a Snubby
I endorse removing the hammer spur, there is no need for it in my opinion. I have had many a hammer spurs removed and none of them suffered from light primer strikes. Furthermore, I prefer smooth double action triggers on my revolvers... not light trigger pulls... there is a big difference.
Cut that spur off and shoot all of your double action revolver without cocking the hammer. Train as ye fight!!!Join the groups protecting your rights from the fools trying to take them from you!

Re: Soliciting Advice on De-Spurring a Snubby
I've had the spur removed from a couple of snubbies and go the extra distance and have the single action notch removed from the hammer at the same time. Bill Jordan not withstanding, I prefer that a spurless hammer not be capable of single action fire. Just my preference, do as you see fit.

When the BG is holding your wife (for example) with a knife to her throat, you may wish you had retained the single-action notch.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll make the move and "de-spur" it

At one time there used to be an after market shroud that could be installed to cover the hammer. Are these no longer available?
