There is almost no reason to kill a bear out of season unless somebody is baiting them or people aren't careful with garbage.
How do you train your dog to ignore bears exactly?

As I said... I would have shot to scare the bear away before "killing out of season".

For as many dogs that are killed by cops and over zealous armed individuals, I'm ok with how this went down, how my dog acted and how I handled it. I chalk it up as my dog protecting (attempting to) me.

Love a good Monday-morning quarterback though.

Why were the dogs loose in the first place?

I really doubt that you actually have to shoot a bear to make him leave.

This boy was at my bird feeder in Sept. 2012. After I took a couple of pics he saw me, got down all fours and started walking toward me. At about 10 yds I fired my 380 into the ground, which is what I happened to have at the tme, and he showed me how fast he could turn around and make it back into the woods. People were still seeing him for a year until PAGC trapped him but he never came back into my yard.
The older I get, the better I used to be.

Where in general is your place? We hear of the bears in our development all the time, but I haven't seen one for a few years. We are between Greentown and Tafton.

Why did the OP feel the need to give the race of the bear? I wonder if he would have still drawn if it were a white bear out there.

I have a place in Promise land. We used to go to a bar IIRC, that was in Greentown. We called it "the Toilet" because you had to duck in the Bathroom or your Head would hit the Steps above. So much fun at a Dive Bar!

If the bear was big enough, shooting it with a .40 cal might just piss it off and precipitate an attack. The noise (without the accompanying pain) of just shooting into the ground might do more to chase it off than putting an ineffective round into it.

I don't think I'd want to try shooting a black bear with less than a .357 or a .44 mag. And, the .357 is marginal.

yeah... like I said... plan was to try to scare it first and only shoot the actual bear if things got ugly with it and the dog... trust me, at no time did i want to shoot the bear. I actually didn't want to discharge at all, and I didn't.

my luck, i would have discharged at the ground, hit one of the many rocks, and end up with fragments of something in my leg...
