Default De-gunning the house for a visiting unknown quantity

I hate dealing with the unknown, and having someone that you don't know from a can of paint come into your home to do some work is just about top on my list of irritating events.

I'd rather not have someone whose past I'm unfamiliar with glance around at my stuff, put two and two together, and come up with .45, or 9MM, or .223. I'm going nuts tonight trying to eradicate the obvious so that this place doesn't go high on someone's list of future surreptitious late-night visits.

What do you do? Do you just say "f*ck it" and clean a shotgun while they're there, or do you walk around for hours nervously scanning for tell-tales and then hiding them away like a squirrel on meth? The worst of it is that he's going to be going into the basement, and then possibly to the top floor of the house. The latter I can deal with, but the former is my holy of holies.

I'd lock up the actual firearms and wouldn't worry a damn bit about the 'telltale signs'.

When I have contractors in doing work I take my firearms out to the family farm to store them for the duration. ...with exception to my carry piece that I keep with me.

If you have a trusted friend or family member, might wanna hit them up to store them.

If you came into my home, you would never know that I was a gun owner.

With the exception of the rare magazine, I display NOTHING.

All guns are in a safe. One hidden in a closet, and one hidden in my bedroom.

LOL They are not so hidden now are they?

    To the OP
I wouldn't worry if they know you have firearms, just don't let them see how many or what you have. Just my opinion though.

I have gun stuff scattered all over this table. I just toss some furs over it. A big beaver hide is great to hide spare mags and loose cartridges. LOL

Are firearms the only thing of value in your home? Fancy artwork, electronics and antiques are just as appealing to a would-be thief as weapons are.

IMO, leaving tell-tale signs of firearm ownership would act more as a deterrent than as bait, particularly if you have a snazzy tv or computer on display. Thieves have to do a cost/benefit analysis of any potential target. Targets that are known to be armed are typically less appealing than ones that are known/suspected to be unarmed.

The good news is that if you have someone in your home doing work, that person is employed, which would suggest that the person is less likely to feel the need to resort to crime to sustain his/herself.

Me, well... If I had signs of firearm ownership, I certainly would not make an effort to hide them. However, I would be sure to keep the actual number, type and location of the weapons private.

Since when I have a contractor in the house is one of the few times I OC, I kinda figure/hope that even though anyone who visits will know within a few seconds there are guns in the house, they will also heed the message the gun on my hip is sending about the risks entailed in attempting unauthorized access.
