Governor signs bill on self-defense shootings

(COLUMBUS, OH) - A bill giving the benefit of the doubt to Ohioans who shoot intruders has been signed into law by Gov. Ted Strickland.

The governor called the measure "common sense legislation" as he signed it Tuesday.

When the new law takes effect in early September, it will be presumed that anyone who injures or kills an intruder in their home or car will have acted in self defense.

Republican state Senator Steve Buehrer sponsored the bill and says it will make Ohioans feel safer in their homes. Prosecutors have complained that it could allow drug dealers to claim self defense in shootings during deals gone sour.

    *bold is mine

....drug dealers could claim self defense in.... yeah, but umm..they're drug dealers!! If you know they're drug dealers, how is them using this going to effect anything, as you should be prosecuting them for drug dealing, not worrying about what they can and can't claim in bad buy shootings... jesus....

The Castle Doctrine here in PA is long over due. As far as the Ohio prosecutors complaint: they should be overjoyed if the drug crowd gets thinned out

Just because they are drug dealers and in the middle of a deal - it doesn't strip them of their right to self-defense. Who knows, the dealer may have been making an honest drug deal(as weird as that sounds) and not cheating or robbing the buyer and the buyer pulls a gun and attempts to rob/kill the dealer.

This is yet another mile stone for those of us who fight to protect the second amendment. Not is it a milestone for gun owners, it is a milestone in self and home defense. Way to go Ohio, on finally making some sense for a change.

P.S. Ohio please consider reciprocity with PA.

When injustice becomes law, rebellion becomes duty!

This is good for us in Ohio. Now if we can get restaruante carry and have no gun signs be of no weight like Pa. we would be pretty well off.

Baby steps.. A little at a time. Wasn't really that long ago that Ohio became Shall Issue.

Hey - you know you are doing well when people are renewing their concealed weapons permits, not because they carry, but because they like having the right to do so. (As I read in the other thread about Ohio)
