My M1 carbine (43 IBM) will not cycle with most commercial ammo. Its in good shape, but unless I load my own and make it pretty hot (upper end of the power range) it FTE's/stove pipes all day.

Before you dump a couple $100 into ammo, make sure it will cycle you Carbine.

My Iver Johnson eats anything you feed it and is so much fun it should be illegal! [Just kidding about the illegal part]. Used it to hunt javelin in Arizona, cycled everything. Maybe USGI has stiffer springs or different ramp?

This. In addition to cheaper shooting, you become impervious to the issue of ammo supply drying up.

cheap range ammo for the 30-30 can be made with cast bullets and small doses of pistol powder under a bit of dacron stuffing to keep the powder close to the primer and ensure uniform ignition.

a classic recipe would be a 170 grain round nose casting over 8-10 grains of green dot or red dot or unique (purpose built for this application) for 900-1100 fps. do not use less powder or use jacketed bullets with these charges or you may end up sticking a bullet in the bore at around 500-600 fps.

you can also use bullets cast for the 30 carbine at around 110 grains.

reasonable 25 yard accuracy, no recoil, quiet, good for first time shooters and training.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Reloading is out for now. I'll have to look around to see what I can find I suppose.
