Magnum Primers..

I recently bought CCI primers and found out it was the magnum version. How would I adjust my powder measure to account for this? (CCI Magnum Primer 450 Small Rifle, H322, 55 grn FMJ). Hodgdon site does not mention primer brand. Thanks!

The reloading manuals will tell you when they want a magnum primer. The magnum primer will make a difference in the ignition. Don't just back off the powder as you don't know what the results will be. Just set them aside until you need them and buy some standard primers. If stored in a cool dry place, primers will last a very long time.

I'm with Xring, I wouldn't even mess with them and just set them aside. Typically, changing primers even from one brand to another will affect your load, much less from changing to a magnum primer. Something else to keep in mind is that ESPECIALLY if you're loading for accuracy, you want the smallest primer that will effectively ignite the charge that you can use. Like in my .300 WSM, I could use Magnum primers, but I can actually get away with using normal large rifle primers. The large rifle primers are more consistent, and alot of reloaders use as a general rule of thumb that they want the smallest "flame" possible to ignite the charge. I have never made a bump like that, so I'm not sure what exactly the effect would be, as Xring said, I'm sure the manual will say.

Yea, sounds safe not to use the powder. Sucks that I primed 100 rounds before noticing.. hahaha... I'll just grab some H335 powder next time. I found some data that includes the magnum primers. Thanks!

Couple of years back I had the chance to buy a combination of 200,000 large magnum rifle and small magnum rifle primers. The primers are the CCI strip versions. Price was super cheap ( $2.50 per thousand ) I could not resist. I use these primers for just about all of my rifle reloading. The only other primers I use are small benchrest primers in my varmint rifles. I am not saying anyone else should use magnum primers, but I have not had any problems yet after loading many 1000's of rounds.

Wow. I guess it should be OK then. I'm currently loading 22 gr with the regular primer.

22.0 gr. H322, CCI450, LC case is what I use to retire cases. I use the same load for 100 yd. match loads, but with Rem 7 1/2 BR's and 75 gr. Hornadys. After 4-5 loads I load I use the 450's and 55-62 gr. pulls, makes good blasting ammo, test ammo. not as accurate.
