Help with Lyman peep sights
I am finally getting around to cleaning up and preparing to shoot my fathers Winchester 75. Along with it was a tin with different front inserts. Well the front housing and the installed insert have offset notches and tabs to seat the insert correctly. The inserts in the tin have equal tabs which won't work as they end up crooked. My question is: are the extra inserts from another gun that Pop may have once had? The tin says 17A but I can find no numbers on the Lyman parts. I do not have a date I this gun, would that hold more info?
Any ideas? Are new inserts for mine available? Is the tin with five inserts plus a plastic orange sight worth anything.
Thanks. image.jpgSit down! You'll never clear leather.

Far as I can tell, the 17A refers to the front sight. Above is a pack of inserts available from Midway. If your inserts won't fit the front sight I guess it's not a 17A.
Do a search for Lyman front Globe sight images and perhaps you can identify what you have.Last edited by Bang; April 10th, 2014 at 01:08 AM.

Re: Help with Lyman peep sights
Yea the Midway inserts are the same as the ones i have in my tin, all I've found on eBay are the same also. I need ones with the offset locators/tab as seen on the middle peep in my pic. Is it possible the front sight might not be a Lyman? its not marked like the rear micrometer section.

Re: Help with Lyman peep sights
Obviously, your front sight is not a 17a. Which is and has been a very popular sight for along time. Your father easily could of had one or more tins of inserts as they did fit other front sights. Check with Brownell's for the proper one that you need.

Re: Help with Lyman peep sights
Searching, I find offset-tabbed inserts for Redfield and Lyman/Anschutz at Brownell's. I find Lyman model 17A, 77 and 93 Globe sights but all use 180 degree tabs. I didn't find anything like that middle one in your attachment.
I suspect the Winchester model 75 may have come with its own proprietary globe front. I'm looking now...
Yes... Winchester offered a Target model 75 with a globe front sight. I see it has a cross-pin in the base.

Winchester may have contracted with Redfield or another supplier.Last edited by Bang; April 10th, 2014 at 11:17 AM.

Take a look at this eBay ad....there are four inserts billed as rare for the model 75 rifle.

Re: Help with Lyman peep sights
The 'post only' insert looks very much like the one in my Daisy BB gun and I think I used to have one like the one on the left. I'm not sure of the model anymore but it is a lever action from about 1968 or '69.
