    Default Shotgun for deer hunting

Anyone out there hunt with a shotgun? I am looking for some suggestions, I been looking at Ithica Deerslayer, Browning Silver Hunter and BPS, and Remington's. I am just looking for a dependable shotgun that won't cost a lot of money. Any help is appreciated.

Will you be using slugs or buck shot?

How much do you have to spend?

Dependable and affordable. I use a mossberg 500. I only use it for hunting, only a few times a year (mostly do archery as I can't hunt shotgun on the private lands I frequent). It is accurate and true, so for these few times a year it gets used, I don't think it is worth spending a ton of money on it. YMMV, but it gets the job done for me.

Picked up a cheapo Winchester Ranger about 20 years ago, came with a 4x scope.... and had my son use it for awhile until he decided he didnt like it.. so I just kept it and used it to take a lot of deer ... Used slugs... NOT sabots.... and could put 4 shots with about a 3 inch spread at 100 yards.... still have it, and with the scope on it I have one hell of a tight pattern at 50 yards for turkey....

Find the gun you like, add what ever extras you want ( if any ) and just practice.... testing different brands of shotshells as they DO shoot different, and you have to find the one that shoots best in your gun.

Good luck and stay safe out there..

I have shot two deer in my life with a gun. Both were with a slug barrel on my Remington 870.

I usually got all I needed in archery season, but those two years, I had requests to take a doe off of a farm that was out of control.

I second the mossberg 500. No scope. Slugs. Very accurate. Used mine for deer hunting a couple of times and it doubled as home defense gun.

Thanks for the replies, I will be shooting slug. I am going to start to look for a used shotgun on this site. I archery hunt so it is hard to justify spending a lot of money on a shotgun that I am going to use a few times a year. Thanks again.

I bought the 500 field/slugster combo. Came with a longer field barrel and a rifled barrel with scope on cantilever mount. Also included 3 chokes with field barrel, so when I finally get around to it, I can hunt birds and turkey with no problem (other than maybe buying a turkey choke.)

Can't go wrong with an 870 with a rifled slug barrel. Every deer I've bagged went down with one of these. Had the best accuracy with copper solids.
