    Default Unsafe in my opinion...discuss

I found this in the classifieds. I don't know if the OP will chime in, he has a zero post count.

I HAVE TWO GUNS FOR SALE:

    1. GEN 4 GLOCK 27 WITH STANDARD SIGHTS COMES W/BOX, PAPER AND THREE MAGS. NEVER FIRED ONLY CARRIED.

    2. SMITH & WESSON SHIELD .40 W/BOX, PAPER AND TWO MAGS. ALSO, NEVER FIRED ONLY CARRIED.

Does anyone here trust their life to an untested firearm? I can't imagine carrying a handgun I've never fired. At the very least, a box or two through all of the mags for function testing. Realistically, several hundred rounds to break it in, ensure reliability and become familiar with it.

    Thoughts?

I thought the same thing when I read that ad a minute ago. It's a bit scary if you ask me. I want to know that the gun works, that I can shoot it accurately and that I am familiar with its recoil and operation before carrying it. Plus, who can resist an excuse to get out to the range?

It could have been just carried around the house to gauge comfort/draw/etc.

Probably not, but I'd like to think that's what happened.

Funny you posted, I read that a little while ago and that's the first thing I thought - how would someone carry a gun that was never fired. Every gun I buy I shoot several times before considering carrying it ( pretty basic stuff ). As someone mentioned, maybe he meant carried just around house to get use to, etc. - but.......

    Unsafe? No.
    Good judgement? No.

I think it is probably pretty common.
    Unwise but common.

I thought the same exact thing. I would never carry a weapon that I haven't shot with both ball and my carry ammunition.

    You're probably right.

Like all those old ladies you see on the news being interviewed about a rash of neighborhood burglaries...

"I'm not afraid - I have a gun, and I'm not afraid to use it."
(spoken as she pulls it out of a drawer to show the camera, trigger on the finger, hand trembling)

There are likely oodles and oodles of people who buy guns for self defense and never shoot them.
    Bad idea.

Well here are my thoughts, and worth every penny you paid...

Although I have never had an enormous collection, I have also never, ever owned a firearm that has gone unfired. Rifles, shotguns, handguns, I bought them to shoot them. Know what else I have never had in almost 45 years of owning various firearms? One that failed to go boom when the trigger was pulled. The closest I have ever had was a fail-to-feed because I improperly locked-in the guns magazine.

Running maybe 500 rounds of carry ammo through your carry piece is rock solid wisdom, sound precautionary measure, good practice, piece of mind, common sense.... yes, all those things. But unsafe? Not in my world. Although I've never done it. Usually very little would stand between me and a trip to the range with any recent acquisition. My shortest time from purchase counter to range time was minutes when I walked from the counter over to the indoor range and emptied 2 50-round boxes into paper. I have pretty much shot the hell out of everything I have ever owned. I can't even wrap my head around the concept of "safe queen"

When I think back about what must easily be 10s of thousands of rounds sent downrange over the decades without ever having one single failure in any of my guns I begin to wonder whether our modern firearms are not the closest thing to the perfect machine that mankind has ever created.

Carry a handgun for protection without firing it first? Wouldn't be me, but honestly speaking it's because I'm like a kid at Christmas time, not because it's unsafe.

But then again, I am an asshole, and everything I wrote here might be wrong.
