    Default Ammo Cans

OK - I saw the deal that scruff posted in the DEALS section for the Gander Mountain ammo cans. Ordered 6 of them. Good deal as far as I can tell. They claim to be new, not old rusty ones.

    So my question:

What does every one think about the old metal cans vs the new poly/plastic cans?

Seems to me that the metal are stronger of course but if buying used rusty cans they might not have good seals on them.

Just wondering which way folks on here tend to go when buying...

I go for the old metal cans every time. I buy almost all of mine from yard sales and flea markets, usually for about $2-7 apiece.

I even buy the rusty ones for the right price. A few minutes with a wire brush, a clean/degrease with dish soap and water, and a coat of Krylon is all it takes to make them new again.

I have some "reconditioned" metal cans and several of the plastic.

I'm starting to lean towards the plastic cans. They seem plenty strong, are lighter in weight than the metal and have greater capacity. I can get 17 boxes of 9mm in the plastic cans.

    I buy these from Amazon.

Nine times out of ten if you read the info on the plastic boxes, they are listed as "water resistant", and not airtight. Big difference.

As far as the rust is concerned, I've only encountered light surface rust on the corners, or where latches/handles are - cosmetic, not structural. All that I've picked up I've opened and inspected the gasket - rust, or no rust - I've never seen rust up in that area.

My primary concern with the plastic cans would be dropping them onto a hard surface while full. Are they going to split open and spill all your precious .22lr all over the driveway? I like the metal cans, I'll buy them when I can get them for less than $8/can. I'll always pick ones with as little rust as possible, have a good straight hinge and intact seal.

The exact boxes I had in mind. ^

I have a few I use for carrying ammo to the range, but not for storage.

This O-Ring sealed ammo can is molded out of rugged polypropylene plastic with a reinforced bottom. They are tough, durable and water resistant. It is also as versatile as it is sturdy.
I take issue with the use of the word "sealed" there, as it is very misleading. Nice boxes, but will never withstand anywhere near the abuse a milsurp could endure.

I like metal cans myself, More durable and can handle being banged around. Some paint and a steel wool will handle most rust. As long as the inside is rust free and the seal is good I don't really care if the outside is covered in surface rust.

I have an issue with them using the term O-Ring on a rectangle.

The only plastic one I own is for carrying my muzzle loading supplies to the range. All others are metal. I prefer the metal just because this is what I have always used, they are indestructable, I can stand on it, doesn't crack if dropped, etc....

The Plano cans are my favorite:

Not a huge fan of the metal cans. I have a few of the MTM cans but I think the Plano cans are better.
