    You're making the assumption a normal gate doesn't leave tracks in the snow. Maybe the critter's gait was altered because it was dragging a gate back to its home to fix its fence.

    +1 on the muskrat.

    As a wee lad, I used to do some creek trapping for them with conibears.

    They kinda look like field mouse or chipmunk tracks just bigger.
