favorite home defense revolver

My neighbor wants a home defense revolver. He has a bad shoulder, so he doesn't want a shotgun or semi handgun. He is a very competent revolver shooter, but isn't sure about the best choice for home defense. Got a favorite?

What caliber does he comfortably shoot? Does he shoot snub nose or a longer barrel revolver?

All questions we need to make an informed response.

He could be competent with only a .22LR revolver or he could be competent with .500S&W ...

I've been in the same situation after shoulder surgery last summer. Actually, I found semis to be better for ambidexterous work. I did however find when practicing with revolvers that S&W revolvers that are inlet for using moon clips worked better for me when reloading. Less fuss and bother than fumbling with individual cartridges or even with speed loaders. This would be a model 442 or 642 in .38 special inlet for moonclips, or a model 325 or 625 if a .45 acp revolver is preferred.

The better advice is to practice weak hand 1-handed shooting and finding what's most comfortable for that. The recovering shoulder will still have range of motion problems and can limit the ability to respond to situations to the side. That problem goes away if there is no dependence on the injured side at all.

My wife is quite the shot with the Ruger GP100 in .357 Magnum.

Mine is a Taurus 617 with a LaserLyte sight. It's also my main carry piece in warmer weather.
Within the confines of a home, it's tough to miss with that little red light.

S&W 625 would be my choice. Big holes and subsonic speeds.
Forget .357 indoors. Hell no. I like my hearing.

^^^THIS^^^. Ppl who recommend 357mag for indoor shooting lack common sense. 38spl is more than enough for two-legged threats. The blast will not disorient you, and your hearing should recover quickly.

357 with 4 inch barrel.

I agree. .357 in a snubby is overkill in my book. .38 spl. +Ps are more than adequate.

I'd say a S&W 686 w/4-6" barrel would be about right. They're large enough that they're not unpleasant to shoot for extended periods at the range, like the 442/642 might be. AND they can be used with .38 Spl or .357.
