    Default Home Defense

    Hi,

I'm in the market for a home defense shotgun. I was looking at the Winchester Speed Pump Defender 12 Guage 18" Shotgun.

What is your opinion on this shotgun?

As well, since I'm new to this area - Chester county PA - does anyone know of a local dealer?

    Thanks

    Joe

The Winchester 1300 defender is a superb weapon,i hav e one since 1992,superbly made fit and finish is exquisite, super smooth you wouldnt even notice its a aluminum action. And the rotating bolt really helps with the recoil., i own 3 self defense shottys and the 1300 defender is my favorite, never a single failure since 1992 does bedside duty fully loaded.

It is a matter of personal preference. I have a Mossberg 500 Cruiser/Persuader. it came with full stock and a rear pistol grip kit. Have tried both, I like the full stock, lets me be more accurate. I am not planning on house clearing just sit and defend so length isn't an issue for me. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!! Take it to the trap range only load the on shell and shoot, take it to a target range shoot targets with it. Learn the gun well if it is going to be a home defense gun. You can't stop to ask the BG about how your shotgun works, know it in and out. I would also be comfy with my Remi O/U but it only holds two shots. I have recently come to the opinion of more ammo is better.

Persuader is a great shotgun. I've always been a fan of them and their affordability. Just for kicks, check out this video. This is a Franchi Spas 12..Italian @ it's best. It was banned in the early 90's because, technically it's an "automatic/optional to pump" shotgun. As you can see from the vid, 9 shots is just disgusting! This is next on my list. You can still get them on gunbroker etc. Not only is it a terrific self-defense shotgun, it's also a collectors item!

The downfall is it's a heavy sob. Then again you can always go get a Benelli.

I don't know of the specific winchester you're talking about, but I have an old win. model 12 my grandpap gave to me and I can say winchester makes a quality shotgun. Mine is super smooth, and though it's not "tactical" in any way it's way smoother than any mossy, or remmington i've shot.

I've always been impressed by winchesters quality. I'd say it'll probably be a winner.

for just a little more you can get a remington 870 or mossberg 500/590, they are much better shotguns. Defenders don't cut it IMO

    I got/like the Mossy 590 A1.

It's tuff enough for our military. You can get a "matching" M7 bayo on ebay for about 20 bucks. And it's about as reliable as tomorrow's sunrise.

What I did was I went to the VF Gun show and handled all the models I was considering. I went in wanting an Rem. 870 but walked out with a Mossberg 500 with an adjustable stock and a grip. It just fit ME the best of all the ones I tried.
