OTC Gun Blue
For touch up purpose, are any of the cold gun blue brands any good? If so, which is best.
Anybody used any of them?
Thanks.

Re: OTC Gun Blue
Used 44-40 for years. It forms a copper wash coating on the metal, then the mild acid darkens the copper wash to simulate a blued look. Works better on some steels than others. Seems better on the old metals then the newer ones.
It's a try it and see. To an extent it can be "built up" but it reaches a point where it tends to remove the previous coat. Flush with water, then oil. However, I found black shoe polish did better than oil. Oil tends to dissolve the cold bluing a bit.
Lately, I tried something I bought at a gun show: Van's Instant gun blue. Works well, and it can be darkened with additional applications.
Brownell's recommends and sells 44-40.
