Default PBS special on Eastern coyote (aka coywolves)

For those of you with an interest in eastern coyotes, here's an episode of Nature on PBS that covers the origin and distribution of our regional wolf/coyote hybrid.

We watched it last night. Alex got irritated by the segment on NYC, because, according to him, coyotes/coywolves/coydogs have been around since the 1980's. He also wants to know how the hell going through Queens is just "passing through"; he said that theory made no sense, because being that the Bronx is the only landlocked borough, they'd have to go into Qqueens, then back into the Bronx.

We did enjoy the show. We've seen plenty of evidence around here, and I've been less than 20' away from a grey fox.

Some are found with "free" cell phones and ebt cards, but curiously never any voter ID.

Still waiting to see one here. I hear them occasionally, but other guys have tried to call them in with no success. They certainly are bigger than the Southwestern ones I've seen. Good hunting!

The big guy walked right under my stand during deer season. I have an 85 lb dog and know a big coyote when I see one. He was to quick to get a shot then (I was completely caught off guard by his stealth) but will be better prepared next time.

That's because the "passing through" idea was a dumb idea by people who are constantly underestimating these animals. Same as the folks who say that eastern coyites are "cowards" and run from the smell of humans. The yotes in that show certainly didn't run from the smell of humans, especially the one that ran after the guy jogging. They certainly weren't afraid of the 21 year old woman that two yotes killed in Canada on a walking path a couple years ago.

We definitely have them out here in triplicate. We also have a gray fox that lives in the woodlot out back. Beautiful!

After watching that it's pretty hard for anyone to say "We don't have any where I live."

They will thrive in suburbia where the population is typically made up of those who would oppose killing them.

Maybe they can hand out condoms.
